RAIL ALE RAMBLE No. 119
“THE YOUNGS FAREWELL”
Saturday 19rd August 2006
One of our saddest trips, to bid farewell to Young's Wandsworth Brewery during its final few days. The last batch of beer was bubbling away but most of the fermenting vessels were already empty; most of the workers had already left, as had most of the dray horses. The irony of the books still for sale at the reception (photo 7) was not lost on us. Where now are the horses, the drays, the pets, the steam engine, the relics of the Surrey Iron Railway and the myriad of other historic bits and pieces? John Young was, at that time hospitalized but still alive, so was unable even to have the satisfaction of "rolling in his grave" as his successors packed their bags and moved their recipe books to the Charles Wells Brewery in Bedfordshire.
At least the afternoon was happier, as we sampled the excellent brews and great hospitality of the recently opened Twickenham Brewery.
