MOORS, BEER, STEAM & SEASIDE

This tour takes a similar format to our last Lakeland Explorer, returning to a very attractive area of the UK where many new micro-breweries have sprung up since our last visit in 2006. The county of North Yorkshire is huge and you may be amazed to see that our first call is south of the Humber, adjacent to Lincolnshire and further south than its South and East Yorkshire neighbours! Scarborough itself is a very attractive town with two sandy bays, two cliff lifts, many gardens and some fine buildings.

Friday 13th April 2012

The group will travel by the 9:03 East Coast train from London Kings Cross via Peterborough to Doncaster, due 10:40. The day’s programme will be as follows:

We arrive at Doncaster station and set off in our private coach around 10:50 for our first stop – a visit to the Great Heck Brewing Company situated in Main Street, Hanwinn House, Great Heck. After this tour, we are off to Tockwith’s Marston Moor Business Park for a tour of the Rudgate Brewery, brewers of a previous Champion Beer of Britain – the luscious Ruby Mild. The visit includes lunch and drinks.

After lunch, we depart for the Yorkshire Heart Brewery in Frank Lane, Nun Monkton, York, naturally with included samples. Our final stop is at the Storyteller Brewery at the Bay Horse Inn which is in Main Street, Terrington. Of course there will be included samples.

After this full day, we set off at 18:00 for the transfer to the Grand Hotel Scarborough where we’ll check in around 19:15. Dinner will be served at 20:00.

Saturday 14th April 2012

Breakfast is served between 7:30 and 9:00, following which we’ll set off for our first visit of the day – the North Riding Brew Pub at 161-163 North Marine Road, Scarborough. This visit will include the usual generous samples.

Being a Crookham Travel trip, we cannot miss the opportunity to travel on the fine North Bay Railway. This miniature railway has been running since 1931 between Northstead Manor Gardens and Scalby Mills. Following this, we’ll visit the Old Scalby Mills pub. There will be plenty of time for you to take lunch where you wish.

We will continue using public transport by taking a bus transfer to Scarborough town; walk to the station for the 14:54 train to Filey. Here we’ll be going to the East Coast Brewing Company at 3 Clay House Yard to the rear of Mitford Street, Filey. There should also be time to visit the Bonhommes Bar on the Crescent at Filey. At the end of the day, we’ll take the train at 17:25 back to Scarborough arrive 17:43 in time for a pint before dinner which is served at 19:30.

Sunday April 15th 2012

Breakfast is served from 8:00 and we’ll take our coach at 10:00 to Whitby. We will have plenty of time to explore this extremely interesting town where you will have time to take lunch and a pint or two. We will be leaving on the 14:40 steam train to Pickering travelling on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. One of our most impressive preserved railways, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs through 18 miles of some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain.

We’ll be leaving Pickering station by coach for a visit to the New Inn and Cropton Brewery, Woolcroft, Cropton. Following this, we are going to the Anvil Inn, Main Street, Sawdon where the first pint is included. The coach will then take us back to the hotel for dinner at 20:00

Monday April 16th 2012

After breakfast, which is served from 7:30, we will check out and depart by coach at 9:30. Today we cross some stunning scenery when we cross the whole of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park (south to north) to the first stop the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge, 1400 feet above sea level and the fourth highest in England. As usual, the first pint will be included.

After this, we’ve a visit to the North Yorkshire Brewing Company, Pinchinthorpe Hall. Next, the Stokesley Brewing Company at the Wainstones Brewery in Stokesley beckons. As we will have had a good breakfast, a late lunch will then be taken at the Captain Cook Brewery which is to be found at the White Swan, 1, West End, Stokesley. As well as lunch, the first pint will be included.

Our final stop on this fully packed weekend is the Cleveland Bay (GBG), 718 Yarm Road, Eaglescliffe. Your first pint is of course included.

Sadly, we must now depart so we will head to Darlington Station for the 18:23 train to Stevenage 20:26 and London Kings Cross, due 20:55 where the tour ends.
