BACK TO GERMANY – DEEP IN THE FOREST
Freiburg im Breisgau is a smallish city nestled in the heart of the Black Forest, set against forested mountains and filled with cobbled streets and gabled beer houses. With its tilting town – and beer – houses, Freiburg feels wonderfully historic but a large student population certainly gives the town a buzz. They attend a gothic university founded in 1457, now located at the edge of the town. In the main square is the Minster, a beautiful cathedral with the most wonderful stained glass. During the last war the glass was removed and safely stored before being refitted at the end of hostilities. Freiburg has a five route metre-gauge tram system to get you around easily with your hotel-supplied free city ticket.
THURSDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2018
The first intention was to use High Speed rail via Strasbourg with two changes and the short walk in Paris. With EasyJet flying so cheaply to Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg Airport (the exit sign says “turn right for France, left for Germany”) this route has to be offered as the preferred one. It does require a dedicated bus ride from the airport direct to Freiburg but if sufficient numbers opt to fly a charter coach will be used. If you do wish to use rail then please indicate accordingly on the booking form. Comparable costs are around £150 return by rail and £95 with one hand luggage by EZY and coach. A welcome evening meal will be provided in a brewpub. (D). The recommended flights are 14:00 LGW to Basel returning 17:00 to LGW.
FRIDAY 30TH NOVEMBER
We shall make a visit to the nearby Rhineland town of Breisach, surrounded by volcanic hills and a 25 minute journey by rail or one hour by bus. The historic town is full of attractive buildings to view and explore, and with a climate similar to the Loire Valley, this area is famous for its wine production. The Badisher Winzerkeller is one of Europe’s largest wineries with a fascinating tour which includes a ride on a miniature train. We shall arrange a special group tour which will include five wine tastings. Departure from the Hbf will be 09:56 (plat 5) arriving Breisach 10:20. It’s a gentle 20 minute walk to the winery. (B)
SATURDAY 1ST DECEMBER
Today will be free for you to explore Freiburg with your transport ticket, and maybe ride the DB Hollentalbahn which climbs 2,000 feet on one of the steepest and most stunning railways in Germany. We would arrange a 5 person group ticket if appropriate. Alternatively, travel further afield perhaps to Mulhouse, renowned for its railway museum and Bugatti exhibition. (B)
SUNDAY 2ND DECEMBER
A CT Xmas Markets tour has never been without a morning tram tour and this year will be no different. A vintage car will take you around some of the city for around 90 minutes. Thereafter the day is yours to explore with your city ticket. (B)
MONDAY 3RD DECEMBER
With a return home not beginning until after lunch we shall visit the Feierling brewpub for a tour and lunch, from 11:00. Departure for the airport will be at 14:00. Return by train would be at the same time, due Paris 18:05, London St. Pancras 20:39. (B) (L)
