An irresistible combination for many, we believe. The French are way ahead in the quality stakes for not only new tram lines but for the modernisation and regeneration of the surrounding areas too, ensuring homage is paid to the plethora of fine buildings which are often passed by trams. With local wines almost everywhere in and around Bordeaux there is plenty to amuse you on the alcohol front. With a micro or two to boot, both cities have in many ways re-invented themselves with the coming of modern trams and the trend in artisanal beers. Another big plus is the fact that Bordeaux can be reached from London St. Pancras in just a net 4h15min, plus the simple cross-city Paris transfer. Montpellier also has a fast TGV service to Paris. This tour is being provided in response to interest shown by some members whose interests stretch beyond beer and breweries and as such, could be termed a boutique tour as it is currently planned for 20 souls. So, now for the detail….

Departure from London St. Pancras will be by the 10:24 Eurostar to Paris Nord due 13:47 where we then pop underground for a direct transfer to Montparnasse for the 14:52 TGV to Bordeaux due 16:56. Our hotel for four nights B&B is adjacent to the station and trams.

Public Transport is excellent in this city and you will have no problem finding your way around by bus or tram or even train. As there is much of interest to do here we shall leave you with plenty of time to do your own thing, equipped of course with our AVB and a transport ticket for each day. It is intended to arrange a couple of wine-related activities and an official visit to the brewpub, as well as a guided tour of the four route tram system. Included in the transport ticket is a Budapest-style river ferry serving five piers in the city. Local TER trains offer visits to the nearby Atlantic beaches or the Gironde river estuary. More than enough to fill our time here!

This being a two-city tour today is transfer day by train to Montpellier, a journey of about four hours. Our hotel here for three nights is close to the station and city attractions. It is planned to arrive here in early afternoon.

The attractive city of Montpellier has many attractions, not least its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and of course, four very interesting tram routes. They are noted for taking their routes through dense areas of the city to serve as many of the population of some 720,000 as possible and for being far from direct in nature. As a result of the Mayor’s policies it is said that 46% of the population has easy access to the trams. The sandy beaches are just a mile or so from the end of one route where (naturally, in Europe) there is a connecting bus to the seaside. Pack your bathing trunks perhaps! There is also a brewpub in the city. As in Bordeaux we shall arrange a visit to the pub and offer a guided tour of the tram system using your transport tickets provided by us.

Morning free before our departure about 14:00 by TGV to Paris Lyon, across the city to Nord for Eurostar to London St. Pancras arriving approximately 2045 where the tour terminates. Timings are not yet available for this day.

Please complete the booking form and send it with your deposit of £250 per person, payable to Crookham Travel, or send it by bank transfer to a/c No. 87825884 sort code 09-01-27 at Santander using reference BDX. It should be received by us please as soon as convenient. The group size is unlikely to exceed 20 with limited single rooms so early action is advisable. Fourteen members have already confirmed their attendance. The higher deposit figure recognises that all rooms booked so far at Bordeaux have been paid for and a large deposit is held at the Montpellier hotel.

The tour cost for this eight day tour (including return rail travel) is not expected to exceed £699 per person twin/double and £735 single occupancy based on 20 members. This is significantly lower than as first published. Exchange rate used is £1.00 = €1.10. Items included are:-

·        Standard class return rail travel from & to London via Bordeaux and Montpellier

·        Four nights B&B in Bordeaux and three nights B&B at 3* Royal Hotel Montpellier

·        City taxes

·        Brewpub visits as arranged
