RAIL ALE RAMBLE No. 142

“THE PAPER MAKERS”

Saturday 6th November 2010

With the onset of winter time this tour stays closer to home and gives us the opportunity of accepting the invitation to visit a recently-opened charitable working museum. The activity this time, papermaking, is at the beginning of the tour when pubs usually have yet to open but on this day, you will be able to enjoy a pint before we make the canal boat transfer to the former Croxley Script works, where a fascinating museum has been opened.  You will get a tour of the mill, see a demonstration of actual papermaking and use of the good old letterpress printing machine.

Travel will be with London Midland Trains’ Groupsave 4 tickets by the 0934 from London Euston, Harrow & Wealdstone 0946, to Apsley arr 1003.  It is just a few minutes walk to the the canalside where the enterprising Manager of the new Fuller’s pub will be open for your first pint. Around 1040 the Papermill’s (covered) canal barge will convey the group for the ten-minute ride to the Mill itself.  The visit here will last about 90 minutes. Our coach will then leave at 1230 and head for the new location the Tring Brewery, which we visited on our 21st birthday trip some 14 years ago. The brewer is arranging a special opening for us and providing a fish & chip lunch to boot.

The remainder of the afternoon will be spent in Aldbury village at the Valiant Trooper, local CAMRA Pub of the Year 2009. The recent change of owner has brought real enthusiasm to its beer range, with six normally being on offer.  An hour or so will be spent here (depending on beers/demand) then we will leave for St. Alban’s city for the early evening and a visit to the Alehouse Brewery, with time also for a pub crawl.  Our coach will leave the city at 2020 for Watford Jn station and the 2051 train to Euston arriving 2109, where the tour ends

The cost of this interesting tour is £41.90 from London, or £36.40 from Apsley using your own tickets. Please send the booking form together with your cheque please, payable to Crookham Travel, plus a 9x4" stamped addressed envelope,  to us at 11 Attlee Gardens, Church Crookham, Fleet, GU52 6PH. Confirmation will be despatched shortly after the closing date of 21st October.  If you wish to pay the modern way, indicate on the booking form; then an SAE will not be necessary.
